Watching a runway show in the Fashion Week, having a private party with celebrities, meeting new friends from different places all over the world\u2026can you imagine these could be parts of your career? It is just like the TV episode of \u201cUgly Betty\u201d, in which Betty Suarez entered a totally different world when she worked for a high-end fashion magazine.<\/p>\n
The media industry has continuously developed along with a sudden growth of the tourism and gaming industries since 2003. According to the survey of Macao Statistics and Census Service, more than 30 local periodical magazines were published in Macao in 2009, a growth of three times of the figure in 2000. Many magazines focus on fashion and lifestyles targeting young readers or the nouveau riche in Mainland China. The media industry in Macau is still developing and many opportunities are provided for young people.<\/p>\n
The common impression of the media is that a crew of people rushing to a car accident and spending 12 hours a day for the headline. However, this is not the whole truth in the business in Macau. According to Chris Chan, Chief Editor of Prime Media, who was also a graduate of English Communication at the University of Macau in 2002, said that besides the editorial part, sales and marketing are also a very important part of a magazine, and it requires the ability of building a good relationship with others. You could always experience excitement such as attending private parties and fashion shows, launching world limited and luxury products, encountering celebrities and meeting new friends with different backgrounds every day; can you do these while you are working as a bank teller?<\/p>\n
Chan also mentioned that sensitivity to news is important to a person who works in the magazine business, but the most significant qualification is having an active and optimistic characteristic. She also said that working as a media professional is all about the people and friends that you know, and hence one has to be confident to talk and expend one\u2019s network in the business.<\/p>\n
Though the media industry in Macao is flourishing, most of the young people and even those who major in Communication still do not want to work in a media agency. The main reason is the salary cannot really reach their expectation and the workload is heavy. However, Chan had a different opinion.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cWhat do you expect to learn from your job? Can you see any breakthrough in the future?\u201d Chan said. Media is a tough job but it could be a career in which you could see the most diversified and glamorous things in the shortest time.
