Most of them feel the competitive pressure from present graduates, foreign employees and the older generation. Nowadays, most of the post-80s want to have better promotion opportunities while self-improvement must first be achieved.

“Aside from my self interest towards the master program, I feel the competitive pressure in job markets as well,” Choi said. Choi is an assistant technician in Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). She wants to be promoted; therefore, she has to compete with her colleagues. “Many of my colleagues have a high education background; most of them have a master degree or engaged in some advanced studies. It gives me pressure and pushes me for self-improvement so that I can compete with them,” she said.

Every day, Choi faces many foreign investors and helps them find suitable ways in making investment in Macao. As a result, she needs to speak fluent English or Mandarin and translate the information clearly. Besides, when there are functions like the Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (MIECF), Choi is required to collate the information in booklets, leaflets and application forms or even to be an interpreter. Hence, amongst all Master of Arts degrees, Choi chooses the Translation Studies as her major because it provides advantages for her job.

Choi also realizes that many enterprises, especially those with foreign capital, tend to employ foreign employees at the management hierarchy. Thus, locals mostly do the administrative work. She thinks if locals can increase their competitiveness by attending more training courses that correspond to their work; it will help them fight for a better position.

Mandy U, who works as a consultant, has applied for a master program as well. She thinks that further knowledge in different areas will help increase her competitiveness. “The social environment requires higher qualifications; self-improvement and training courses are needed in order to gain better job positions,” U said.

U is now working for Aon which is an international company. Her job requires her to meet different customers either from Macao, neighboring regions or foreign countries. Thus, she needs to be well prepared at any time and translate the information to the customers correctly. “With such a heavy workload every day, I still insist on studying the master course because I find that many colleagues have already finished master programs or are even applying for doctoral programs. If I want to be competitive, I think self-improvement is needed,” U said. U has also enrolled in several special subject courses, like the Macao Basic Law. With the advanced knowledge in various areas, U thinks that she can get more advantages than others.

However, not all the post-80s believe that the pressure for competitiveness has a major role that leads them to apply for further studies. Some of them expressed that participating in advanced studies is due to their own interest. Elvina Kuan, a working student who is also a secretary, said, “I engage in advanced studies because I would like to enrich my knowledge and to satisfy my interest in learning.” Kuan said that she has an insatiable desire to learn and she thinks that learning is an endless process. According to her, learning helps broaden her horizon, and she will apply for more courses later on as she has a deep interest in learning.

By Candy U Man Kit “Achievements in education help me become more competitive than the others and enrich my life,” Althea Choi, a Year 1 student majoring in Master of Translation Studies, said.
