Since last year when he watched the video of how people from foreign countries made light painting on YouTube, he started to try out on his own with friends and discovered the enjoyment of light painting.

When we were growing up, we were taught in schools to draw or paint using color pencils. Yet nowadays, light is becoming a new and hot element in painting, together with photography. As more and more people get to know about light painting from media or friends, it has become a trendy plaything among the post-80s. This creative photography is easy, hot, and a lot of fun. You may also want to consider it as a form of art, comprising painting as well as photography.

What is light painting?

Light painting, also known as light drawing and light graffiti, is an art form in which light is used as the source to “paint” a picture in the air, and captured on film using long exposures as well as slow shutter speeds. Simply open the shutter of your camera long enough and use the light source such as a flashlight to draw in the darkness, you can draw anything that you want or add interesting effects in the picture. After you finish drawing with your light source, close the shutter of your camera, and a picture is completed. This is absolutely a fun thing to do by yourself or with friends.

All you need is……

To make a light painting, you need a camera, either digital or film, a tripod for keeping the camera steady, and lastly a light source. It can be flashlight, cell phone, firework sticks, or light sticks that we use in concerts. All these tools are commonly used in light painting.

Remember……

The principle of light painting is to use a long exposure technique to record a continuous locus of the light source on the film in a film camera, or on the light-sensitive integrated circuit — charge-coupled device (CCD) in a digital camera. Basically, there is no special requirement for lens in light painting. The main skills are setting up a slow shutter speed and a small aperture.

First of all, set your camera to “shutter priority” mode, which is often abbreviated as Tv or S on the camera mode dial. Then you can choose a slow shutter speed while the camera chooses an appropriate aperture. Remember in doing light painting, a small aperture is needed and a low film speed (usually referred to as ISO speed) can help keep the graininess of the photo low. Besides, results may vary depending on whether or not you are in complete darkness or under street lights.

In addition, you may paint in the air as usual, or paint a light rail through moving the camera. However, the latter is much more difficult and you have to try and practice more to take a good picture.

The most important is……

To create a satisfying light painting, your creativity is far beyond all the techniques that you need. Explore your creativity right now and start creating your first light painting by trying to draw your names or a simple pattern by yourself or with friends. You will definitely find light painting amusing!

By Artemis Ho Mei In “We used to shoot portrait and landscape, but the idea of light painting is that we are shooting images that we draw using our own creativity, and that comes up with different effects in each picture,” said Diabo Le, who is an amateur photographer as well as a fan of […]

[8

post-160","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle
["GET
